The plane, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, had over 170 people on board when Mr Machchhar was attacked and the plane plummeted more than 17,000ft.
By opening the door, passengers and crew were able to overpower the attacker and land the plane safely.
In a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Captain Machchhar described the moment, while he was “fighting for his life”.
Mr Modi praised the pilot and told him “the whole country is praying for you”.
