The Labour frontbencher Imran Hussain has resigned over the party’s position on the Israel-Hamas conflict. During an LBC interview in October, the Labour leader, Kier Starmer, said Israel ‘has the right’ to withhold power and water from Gaza. Hussain admitted the party leader’s comments had left him ‘deeply troubled’ and said he could no longer ‘sufficiently in all good conscience’ serve as shadow levelling up minister as he wanted to be a strong advocate for a ceasefire. In October, Hussain gave an impassioned plea in the House of Commons, pushing the UK government to condemn Israel’s bombing of Gaza. Hussain asked the foreign secretary ‘how many thousands of innocent Palestinians must be slaughtered before the government condemns this brutality and bloodshed?’
