IN FULL: Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood on the future of the justice system | ITV News

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed on Thursday that the government has accepted the majority of the recommendations outlined in the landmark Independent Sentencing Review, led by the former justice secretary David Gauke.

Among the reforms recommended to free up prison spaces is voluntary chemical castration for sex offenders to reduce reoffending, and releasing criminals after serving just a third of their term if they behave well in jail, which would include some violent offenders.

The latter measure has already sparked backlash from opposition MPs after the government previously insisted violent criminals such as domestic abusers and sex offenders would not be eligible for early release.

ITV News Political Correspondent Carl Dinnen sat down with the Justice Secretary to learn more about the thinking behind the proposals, the current state of the UK justice system, and whether it could survive the change.
