inflation jumps to 3.5%

Inflation has jumped to its highest level in more than a year after a dramatic rise in household bills, which led to last month being dubbed "awful April".

It surged to 3.5% in April from 2.6 per cent in March. Much of the increase was driven by higher payments for water, energy, council tax and transport.
The rise in national insurance contributions and the minimum wage also led some companies to raise prices.
