Inside a community that stepped in to help elderly farmer targeted by fly-tippers | ITV News

A farmer left ‘distressed’ and ‘distraught’ by a £40,000 bill to clear waste left by fly-tippers has told of the life-changing support he has received from members of the public.

We’re stood in a farmer’s field, amid piles upon piles of waste that has been dumped illegally here.

Amid the 200 tonnes that has been strewn across this field, we can see everything from mattresses, fridges, even children’s toys.

It was fly-tipped here last year, months after the farmer who tends to this land had turned 80, and shortly after his wife died of cancer.

To compound an already terrible year for the farmer – who wants to remain anonymous – he faced financial ruin and was due to pay £40,000 out of his own pocket to remove it.

That was until people up and down the country rallied round and raised the funds themselves.

His neighbour told us the help and support has been life-changing.
