The killing of a second US citizen in Minneapolis in less than a month has sparked widespread protests and increased scrutiny of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE).
Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was shot dead during an altercation with multiple ICE officers on January 24 after they confiscated a legally owned weapon from him.
The incident, which comes less than three weeks after the fatal shooting of Renee Good, also 37, has led to further protests in Minneapolis and other US cities over federal immigration tactics.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the agent acted in self-defence after Pretti, who they say had a handgun, resisted their attempts to disarm him.
However, there was no sign of a gun in his hand – only a mobile phone – when agents shot him 10 times, according to analysis of videos from the scene.
US President Donald Trump has said his administration is "reviewing everything" following the fatal shooting, but has refused to say whether the agent acted appropriately.
The facts around the killing of Good on January 7 have also been hotly contested, and over the weekend the FBI agent who initially began working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate the fatal ICE shooting resigned from the bureau.
It is understood Tracee Mergen resigned following pressure from the bureau in Washington DC to discontinue an inquiry into the ICE officer who shot Good to death, as videos showed her trying to drive away from a confrontation.
