Robert Moore reports from Western Jamaica.
"This has been an immensely frustrating hurricane relief effort to report on, one of the saddest in my years of covering extreme weather events.
Hopes were high that we would witness a textbook emergency response. Jamaica has powerful friends overseas, including the UK and the US, who have significant resources.
We knew this storm was coming days before it made landfall. This was not an earthquake that could have been predicted.
Kingston airport quickly reopened to commercial and cargo flights. The roads from Kingston to the ravaged parishes in the west are challenging but adequate to run food and aid convoys.
The medical needs in Black River and Whitehouse, and in Brompton and other inland communities, are significant but not overwhelming. Field clinics would have made a huge difference.
And yet here we are, a week on, and I have yet to see any significant government or international presence on the ground beyond a few soldiers and police officers on patrol.
On Sunday, a truck did arrive with assistance – water, food parcels, and some bleach. Crowds gathered around it. It was a private effort organised by a Kingston-based charity.
One truck for tens of thousands of people in need. The local MP said he was disappointed and flabbergasted.
The anger is real. Many people have stopped us and pleaded for help.
We travelled with one group from the Brompton Lane community on the back of their flatbed truck. They told me they were searching for food in the debris to bring back to their families.
One man wept as he described efforts to maintain supplies of cancer medications for his wife.
Two days later, they are still waiting for any assistance to arrive."
