Hundreds of thousands of Afghans have been expelled from Iran in a deportation crackdown over security concerns in what’s been called the world’s unseen Refugee crisis.
Over several decades, millions were forced to flee Afghanistan by factors like military conflict, including the 2021 Taliban takeover. The United Nations estimates upwards of four million Afghan people have crossed into neighbouring Iran in the last 40 years, with many second and third generations building a life in Iran.
But now, amid heightened Middle East tensions, culminating in the recent Israeli and US attacks on Iran, Tehran began its programme of expulsions — a million and a half Afghans so far this year, with over 400,000 people forcibly sent back in the past month alone.
