
There have been multiple reports of explosions across the Middle East after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran as part of what Donald Trump called a “major combat operation”.
Iran launched retaliatory strikes that targeted Israel and US military bases in the region after its capital Tehran and other major cities were attacked on Saturday morning.
Fifty-seven people were killed when a strike hit near a girls’ school in southern Iran, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.
Iranian attacks on Gulf states was widely condemned, with Saudi Arabia warning of "grave consequences for Tehran".
One person was killed by debris in Abu Dhabi after air defences intercepted Iranian missiles, local media said. Qatar intercepted two Iranian missiles over its country, Qatari official said, while there were reports of multiple explosions in Abu Dhabi and Qatar, all of which have US bases.
Bahrain said that a missile attack targeted the US Navy’s fifth fleet headquarters in the island kingdom.
Saudi Arabia issued a statement saying it "condemns and denounces in strongest terms the blatant Iranian aggression and the flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan".
It continued: "The Kingdom affirms its full solidarity with and unwavering support for the brotherly countries, and its readiness to place all its capabilities at their disposal in support of any measures they may undertake. It also warns of the grave consequences resulting from the continued violation of states’ sovereignty and the principles of international law."
