Demonstrators stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on Thursday in protest against a planned Qur’an burning in Stockholm which was organised by Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee who resides in the country. Hundreds of people gathered at the diplomatic building in the early hours of Thursday, waving flags and symbols of influential Shia religious leader Muqtada al-Sadr. The Iraqi government later expelled the Swedish ambassador in protest against the planned burning of the Qur’an and recalled it’s chargé d’affaires. Sweden said its embassy staff were safe and that the Iraqi government had failed in its duty to protect the complex.
