
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has pushed through a controversial electoral reform ahead of the 2027 general election. Under the new rules, a coalition winning just over 42% of the vote could secure a majority in parliament. Meloni says the changes will bring political stability. Her opponents accuse her of rewriting the rules to stay in power.
But could the reform actually backfire on her? We speak to political scientist Cecilia Emma Sottilotta, who joined other Italian academics in warning parliament about the changes, about the implications for Italian democracy and the battle for power in Rome.
