The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has refused to rule out raising income tax, employee national insurance contributions, and VAT in next month’s budget.
Labour promised not to increase these taxes in its election manifesto, but when asked by the Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch whether he still stood by these promises, he declined to say yes.
"As she well knows, no prime minister or chancellor will ever set out their plans in advance," Starmer replied, leading to jeers from the opposition.
