A long-running US blockade is stopping vital oil shipments into Cuba, one of America’s oldest rivals.
The communist-run island is now facing widespread blackouts, shortages of food and medicine, and growing unrest. Protests are erupting, often in complete darkness, as the situation deteriorates.
Trump has raised the idea of a “friendly takeover,” while also warning it may not be so peaceful. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio continues to push for change, calling Cuba’s current system “unacceptable.”
But Cuba’s leadership isn’t backing down. President Miguel Díaz-Canel has vowed “impregnable resistance” against any attempt to take control of the country.
