US President Donald Trump, who’s in Riyadh on the first leg of a trip to Gulf countries, announced on Tuesday that the US would be lifting all of its sanctions on Syria. The announcement triggered an outpouring of celebration on the streets of Damascus, with Syria desperately needing foreign assistance to help rebuild after more than a decade of civil war. Today, Trump met Syria’s new leader Ahmad al-Sharaa at a meeting of Gulf nations hosted by Saudi Arabia. We talk to Daniel Gerlach, a Middle East expert and the editor-in-chief of the German Middle East magazine Zenith, why Trump lifted sanctions on Syria.
