Israel’s security cabinet approved the plans in a late late-night cabinet meeting on Friday.
The Israeli military “will prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.
The move has sparked warnings against it from across the globe.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that Germany will suspend arms exports to Israel that could be used in Gaza “until further notice,” following the announcement.
The move by Germany – one of Israel’s largest arms suppliers – comes as a surprise, as it has previously avoided the tougher stance taken by some European Union allies.
