Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision was "absurd", rewarded Hamas and was "aimed at a domestic voting audience".
Families of hostages held in Gaza called the move a "betrayal of humanity".
Sir Keir Starmer said his policy would "revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution".
