The Israeli military says its forces have begun a "targeted ground operation" in southern Lebanon.
The Israel Defence Forces said "localised and targeted raids" were being carried out against Hezbollah targets near the border with northern Israel.
"These targets are located in villages close to the border and pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel," it said.
Israel says it wants to remove the threat posed to communities in northern Israel and return around 70,000 residents to the area.
Hezbollah says it will stop targeting northern Israel if it agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza.
