Italy will ban face coverings in schools and cap the number of foreign students per classroom, after ministers approved a plan unveiled by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.

The decree still needs to be confirmed by parliament but paves the way for burqas and niqabs to be banned in school from the 2027-28 school year.
It also places a 30% limit on the number of non-citizen students in each classroom who can’t speak Italian. There will be a €1,000 (£860) fine for non-compliance.
