'It's a natural disaster': Algae bloom killing thousands of marine animals in Australia | ITV News

The algae bloom off the Australian coast has been going on for four months and killed thousands of marine animals.

It has overgrown due to a mixture of factors including high water temperatures last year, flooding and associated run off of nutrients into the sea and climate change.

It is effectively suffocating marine life, depleting oxygen in the water and affecting the gills of fish.

It is not toxic to humans but many surfers and beach users have reported bad coughs when exposed to it.
