Keir Starmer has asked the UK prime minister about the government’s action plan after the murder of Sarah Everard by a police officer three years ago.

He said the Angiolini report said there was nothing to stop this happening again. Rishi Sunak responded by saying the largest ever screening of serving officers had been carried out, the College of Policing had updated its statutory code on vetting, and further recommendations were being considered. The Labour leader, formerly head of the Crown Prosecution Service, said he was familiar with codes in criminal justice systems, which prompted loud heckling. Starmer said: ‘This is too serious for that’ and later told the prime minister: ‘It’s not games’ and needed to be taken more seriously.
