Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in jail for a plotting a military coup – after losing the 2022 election.
The court found that Brazil’s current president, Lula da Silva was to be assassinated as part of the conspiracy.
Many took to the streets to celebrate the conviction – but the sentencing of such a polarising figure was always going to be a divisive moment. For Bolsonaro’s supporters, sadness, and galvanising anger at what they see as political persecution.
