The British chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, told the Conservative party conference he was going to freeze the expansion of the civil service until numbers were down to pre-pandemic levels.

He added that this should save £1bn. Hunt said he would not lift the freeze until there was a plan for public sector productivity improvements.
