A tearful Joe Biden was given a four-minute standing ovation as he took to the stage to say farewell at Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The US president branded Donald Trump a "loser" and said democracy "must be preserved" in a reference to the Capitol riots.
Mr Biden is standing down having been replaced as the party’s candidate for the November election a month ago by Kamala Harris.
