Judge condemns "violent, self-centred, coercive" man who stabbed wife in broad daylight | ITV News

A "violent, self-centred, jealous, controlling and coercive" man who stalked his estranged wife before stabbing her to death as she pushed their baby in a pram in the street has been jailed for at least 28 years.

Habibur Masum, 26, launched a "ferocious" attack on 27-year-old Kulsuma Akter as she walked on Westgate in Bradford, before calmly leaving their seven-month-old son at the scene and going on the run.

A trial at Bradford Crown Court heard that Masum murdered Ms Akter after tracking her to a refuge, where she had been staying to escape his abuse.

He stabbed her 26 times and stamped on her as she lay on the ground.

Jailing him for life with a minimum term of 28 years, Judge Mr Justice Cotter told Masum: "I’m sure that you can be properly described as violent, self-centred, jealous, controlling and coercive with a firmly held view your wife was not your equal.

"You stole a precious young life in a brutal and merciless fashion. It was your refusal of her to have a life free from your violence and controlling behaviour. You have shown no real remorse, only self pity."
