The UK prime minister was questioned about the reported chaos in the Home Office.
His home secretary has described the department as “not fit for purpose,” while a committee chair suggested splitting it into separate migration and crime divisions.
Starmer said: “We inherited a huge mess across nearly all government departments, including the Home Office,” citing the asylum hotels issue as an example. He blamed the previous government for failing to process claims, which left tens of thousands housed in hotels.
He added that his government has halved the number of hotels in use and is “determined” to close them entirely.
