Labour has overturned a 24,664 Tory majority in Mid Bedfordshire and a 19,634 majority in Tamworth, delivering a significant blow to Rishi Sunak’s hopes of holding on to power at the next general election.
Keir Starmer said Labour was ‘the party of the future’ by taking seats that had been comfortably Conservative.
Labour’s Sarah Edwards won the Tamworth byelection with a majority of 1,316, while Alistair Strathern took Mid Bedfordshire with a 1,192 majority.
