Ketamine deaths deaths up 20 times since 2015

Deaths from the illicit drug ketamine are estimated to have soared twenty-fold since 2014.

A new study from King’s College London suggests that the anaesthetic which can be hallucinogenic caused six deaths in 1999 but that surged to an estimated 123 in 2023 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Mixing ketamine with other drugs including opioids and cocaine is thought to have fueled the rise in deaths and has led for calls for the Class B drug to be reclassified.
