'Kidfluencers': How to protect children who are making a business out of the internet | ITV News

Children who are making money by promoting brands on the internet are known as ‘kidfluencers’. There is currently no legal framework for the business, and fears are growing that children and young content creators could be vulnerable to exploitation.

New research given exclusively to ITV News has found that only half of parents of young influencers have a dedicated savings account for their child’s earnings. And more than half of commercial brands rely on parents to handle their child’s financial compensation.

A former child influencer has created her own code of conduct with the hope of creating a solid legal basis for parents and businesses to address the risks involved in commercial child-led content. And we heard from a 14-year-old with more than 275,000 followers about the steps she and her mother take to protect her finances and her privacy.
