The King and Queen are set to meet US President Donald Trump five times over four days, as they seek to repair strained relations between the UK and the US following the Iran war.
British diplomats and palace officials acknowledge the visit comes at a difficult time, but say King Charles has the experience to make it a success and commands the respect of President Trump.
However, those involved also describe it as the most high-risk diplomatic trip of his reign so far.
