Labour beats SNP and Reform to win Scottish byelection

People need to "change the script" on Scottish Labour after the party’s surprise win in Hamilton on Friday, the party’s leader has said.

Deputy lord lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Davy Russell won the seat from the SNP, formally held by the Scottish minister Christina McKelvie before she died in March, by a majority of 602 votes.

The surprise win comes against the backdrop of national polls which placed Scottish Labour in third, behind the SNP and Reform UK. It will give a boost to Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar’s bid to become First Minister in next year’s election.
