Transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, has told Sky News Labour’s significant defeat in the Gorton and Denton by-election was "deeply disappointing".
She said: "There’s no doubt that last night was a difficult and deeply disappointing night for my party, the Labour Party."
Alexander went on to say that it is "not unusual for governing parties to lose mid-term by-elections", and added: "I don’t think we should over-interpret this result".
