The Government has announced its intention to build the long-promised Northern Powerhouse rail scheme but construction is not expected to get underway until the 2030s.

The Treasury said it also wants a new rail line connecting Manchester and Birmingham but that it would not be “a reinstatement of HS2" and no timetable has been provided on when it will be built.
