Prime Minister Keir Starmer attempted to defend looming tax rises by insisting they are the only way to prevent what he described as "devastating austerity".
Mr Starmer said his party would run towards the tough decisions – made necessary by the state of public spending and public services.
Two days before the budget, he also sought to reassure working people that the pain in the short term would be worth it.
