Life in Diego Garcia camp: rats would 'crawl over our children'

For three years, one of the remotest places in the world, Diego Garcia, a UK/US military base was home to dozens of stranded Tamil asylum seekers.

They travelled half way around the world’s oceans for a better life, but ended up spending more that 1,000 days in detention on the Indian Ocean Island.

This is their story about living through tropical storms, surviving in rat infested tents, forced to eat rotting food.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office have said: "This Government inherited a deeply troubling situation that remained unresolved under the last administration for years after the migrants’ arrival on Diego Garcia.

Diego Garcia has never been a suitable long-term location for migrants. This government has now relocated almost all of those housed on the island to the UK as a one-off measure to ensure their continued welfare and safety.”
