Lords vote to delay Rwanda treaty in another setback for Sunak

The House of Lords has voted in favour of a motion to delay ratification of the new Rwanda treaty until the government can show the country is safe. It’s the first parliamentary defeat for Rishi Sunak’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda and puts the prime minister on the back foot again. Under the terms of the Safety of Rwanda bill, the law will not come into force until the treaty is ratified. The bill was passed by the Commons last week but came after a Tory row that damaged the prime minister’s authority.
