A curfew has begun across parts of downtown Los Angeles in response to several days of protests.
The city’s mayor Karen Bass said the move was necessary to protect businesses from being looted.
However, California governor Gavin Newsom said Donald Trump’s decision to send in the National Guard had inflamed the situation and democracy was "under assault".
The protests are in response to raids carried out by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE).
