French President Emmanuel Macron has addressed the nation after more than two thousand people were arrested in riots, which began as student protests over education standards, and then ballooned into wider cost of living protests.
Admitting that the country feels ‘anger and shame’, he called for unity and promised those involved would face the full force of the law.
The protests are no longer contained to France, with similar scenes across parts of Europe.
