
An elite unit of Madagascar’s military says it has taken charge of the country, after lawmakers voted to impeach embattled president, Andry Rajoelina. He fled the country on Sunday after parts of the military joined anti-government protests and has refused to step down.
Youth-led protests in Madagascar started over almost three weeks ago and have resulted in deadly clashes with security forces. They are being fuelled by public anger over water and power outages, and alleged corruption.
