Andry Rajoelina reportedly fled Madagascar in a French helicopter approved by President Emmanuel Macron.
It follows over a fortnight of youth-led protests over high unemployment, the cost of living and corruption.
On Sunday, the president claimed a military coup was under way after CAPSAT, a wing of the military, claimed it had taken control of the country’s entire forces and sided with protestors.
