Major incident declared as train derails causing travel chaos

A major incident has been declared after a train derailed near Shap in Cumbria — but officials say, remarkably, there are no reported injuries.

The 4:28 Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow to London came off the tracks just after six o’clock this morning.

Around 85 passengers and train staff were on board and have since been safely evacuated and taken to a nearby hotel — some said to be in shock.

Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, says emergency crews are working to get everyone off safely, while Avanti warns all lines between Penrith and Oxenholme are blocked.

The network is urging passengers not to travel north of Preston as disruption is expected for several days.
