Teenagers will soon be allowed to drive trains to help boost staffing numbers and reduce cancellations. The current age limit for drivers is 20, but this will be dropped to 18.

Services are frequently disrupted due to operators relying on drivers voluntarily working extra shifts, but the government hopes cutting the qualification age will stop this. They said a consultation carried out by the Conservative government last year received “overwhelming support from across the industry”.
