Minister refuses to say that new measures will eliminate court backlog by 2030

The government is today announcing that there will be an extra 4,000 Crown Court sitting days in the next financial year as ministers try to get a grip of the backlog in the justice system.

Shabana Mahmood, the justice secretary, told Sky’s Wilfred Frost that this number of sitting days is "unprecedented", but needed due to the backlog of 73,000 cases.
