The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), emerged as the largest party with 97 seats, up from 87 in the 2021 election, overtaking the National Rally of Independents (RNI) that led the last government.
They were bolstered by the recruitment of Fouzi Lekjaa, leader of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, weeks before the vote, who was widely seen as the driving force behind the competitive transformation of Morocco’s national football team.
But behind the football hype is deep frustration among many young Moroccans, some of which came to a head when more than 70,000 people crossed from Morocco towards the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, in one of the biggest migration surges in its history.
