It was supposed to be a peaceful protest organised by the Gen Z 212 movement via Discord. But it was quickly shut down by the police and within a week at least three people have been killed, more than 300 injured and over 400 arrested, according to Morocco’s Interior Minister.
The protesters, mostly young Moroccans, say they are angry because the government is investing around $5 billion into sporting events like the 2030 World Cup while public services like health and education are struggling.
Amnesty International has urged the government to address protestors’ demands for social and economic rights.
