Myanmar earthquake: Race against time after cries heard under rubble in Bangkok | ITV News

ITV News Asia Correspondent Debi Edwards is in Bangkok where a cry for help was heard under the rubble of a construction site, nearly a week after the Myanmar earthquake. The disaster has claimed over 3,000 lives, and many are still trapped. In Bangkok, rescue workers asked a woman stuck beneath a collapsoed building to knock three times if she was alive. She replied with three knocks.

Now rescue teams are battling to get her out but removing concrete is a complex and difficult task. Several tonnes of concrete have already been removed but the site is unstable and therefore dangerous.

A US team helping overnight said that they were hopeful that they could get at least one person out alive in Thailand. But, like other Western search and rescue teams and NGOs, they have been blocked from entering Myanmar. Aid from India, China and Russia has been allowed in because these countries are sympathetic to the military regime. Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing will attend an economic summit in Bangkok today, leaving behind millions of people who are without food, water and who have lost their homes.
