Myanmar's junta says election will provide path to peace - but opponents criticise 'sham' vote

Polls have opened in Myanmar for the country’s first general election in five years.

Following a military coup in February 2021, the army seized power deposing the last democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It triggered a civil war.

But opposition groups have warned any new election won’t be fair.
