Sir Keir Starmer has called Rishi Sunak’s National Service plan "desperate", describing it as a "teenage Dad’s Army".

Giving his first keynote speech of the election campaign, the Labour leader said he didn’t think the proposal would work but admitted the UK needed "strong defences".
