NATO summit: No consensus on how to deal with Ukraine's membership ambitions | DW News

US President Joe Biden is wrapping up his trip to Europe for the NATO summit with a visit to the military alliance’s newest member: Finland.

Biden has arrived in Helsinki for meetings with Nordic leaders. Finland joined NATO in April, expanding the alliance’s presence on Russia’s doorstep. Sweden is also expected to become a member, after Turkey dropped its opposition. But one country not joining NATO soon is Ukraine.

The alliance’s annual summit wrapped up two days of talks in Vilnius with Russia’s war in Ukraine taking centre-stage at the summit. Countries from the G7 club of powerful democracies which includes Germany, Japan and the United States, signed off on a declaration to offer Ukraine new security guarantees. Though President Zelenskyy welcomed the new pledges, they fall short of his aspirations for NATO membership.

We talkt to DW’s Nick Connolly in Kyiv. DW’s Konstantin Eggert has been following the summit in Vilnius – and the reaction coming from the Kremlin. And we’re joined by Marina Henke, an International Relations analyst.
