NATO's defence spending target could be 'unrealistic', says alliance's former chief

Lord Robertson, the former secretary general of NATO, has warned that a reported defence spending target of 3.5% for members could be unaffordable.

He told Sophy Ridge half the countries in NATO "don’t even spend the 2%" laid down at a previous summit in Wales 11 years ago.

Italy, Spain, Portugal and Canada are just some of the countries that might struggle to meet the target, Lord Robertson said.
