Israel and Hamas have agreed a deal for the release of 50 women and children held hostage in Gaza in return for 150 Palestinian women and children to be freed from Israeli jails during a four-day ceasefire. The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said the first round of hostages would be free within two days of the deal. During a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said his forces would ‘continue to fight’ in Gaza until all of the hostages were released. The deal comes more than six weeks after the conflict began on 7 October when Hamas launched attacks on southern Israel, killing at least 1,200 people. Israel launched an air and ground assault in retaliation, killing more than 14,000 people in Gaza
